INT01 (2)The new Llangollen Health Centre Open Submission for Visual Artist
Calling all visual artists, please note that the deadline for this application has been extended to 12th January, 2015
Completion date of artwork: July 3rd 2015

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB), Arts in Health and Wellbeing Creative Well programme is looking to commission an established visual artist to design and produce a high quality piece of work to be installed in the new Llangollen Health Centre which is currently being constructed and is due to open in July 2015.

We aim to enhance the contemporary and bright feel of the building and the regeneration of the site on which it stands and would like to commission a piece of permanent art (which must remain in its original condition for a minimum of 10 years) which reflects the environmentally and culturally rich area of Llangollen.

The project and building: The new Llangollen Health Centre will be a newly constructed building from which a wide range of healthcare services such as GP services, community nursing and midwifery services, outpatient clinics, therapies, mental health care services and social care along with Third Sector services will be provided for the Llangollen area.

This £5.2m project forms an important part of BCUHB programme of community services across North Wales which are intended to deliver as many co-located healthcare services as close to patients homes as possible.

The building is currently being constructed on the former River Lodge Hotel site on the A539 in Llangollen. It will be a substantial building with a 2 storey section parallel with the road and a wing on the south side overlooking the River Dee with the main entrance, reception, waiting and tea bar areas in.

Brief: The selected Artist will be required to design and produce a ceiling suspended artwork which will run across the width of the main patient waiting area on the ground floor of the building. The waiting area will have the benefit of a large window with views of over the River Dee and opposite side of the valley.

INT02The design must take into consideration the future cleaning and maintenance requirements for the artwork to ensure that it meets infection control requirements (information provided upon request). Public participatory element to this commission would be desirable. Weight restrictions will apply given that there isn’t a concrete soffit to this single storey section of the building, a lightweight design would be desirable.

Position of the artwork: Please see the accompanying plan and images.
Dimensions: The maximum dimensions for the artwork will be 700mm high underneath a ceiling height of 3000mm, 4000mm long and 1500mm wide.Project fee/ costs: £5000 inclusive of the artist fee, design, production, materials including the supply of any fixings for suspending the artwork, travel, transport costs, meetings, VAT, co-ordinating and overseeing installation.

BCUHB will be responsible for labour costs for fixing the installation up to a maximum installation time period of 6 hours for 2 persons with access equipment restricted to one scissor lift. BCUHB will be responsible for future maintenance costs so long as the artwork performs in line with the brief and proposal.

Who can apply: Open to all with preference to a locally based artist or artist with local links given the community based nature of the healthcare services that will be provided from the building. Would best suit a contemporary visual artist / light artist.

Artist requirements: The appointed Artist would be required to develop a detailed design by the 5th of January 2015 for approval by the project Arts Group and Project Board, maintain regular contact with the appointed project arts co-ordinator/Co-ordinator for the BCUHB Arts in Health and Wellbeing programme, attend planning meetings in Llangollen and liaise with the contractors and building design team representatives.

Production and installation of the approved design must be to a high standard. The artist will be responsible for overseeinginstallation.

It should be noted that the building is currently programmed for handover in week commencing 27th July 2015 however this programme may change and the artist may need to be flexible with the installation date.
